SG: Margie, how did you find the courage to live boldly?
MW: It certainly wasn’t the absence of self-doubt or fear! Like every woman, I’ve feared failure, being judged and looking foolish in the pursuit of my dreams. But courage is not the absence of fear, rather it is action in its presence. In writing “Find Your Courage,” I risked the possibility that I would be insufficient for the task of helping the reader find their courage. I wrote it anyway. Why? Because I believe that we fail far more from timidity than we do from over daring. I am very conscious about my choice not to let my fears keep me from living my life fully. When it comes to pursuing dreams that inspire me I would rather fail than have to look back one day and ask myself, “I wonder what if I had tried?”
I find courage by connecting with an inspiring vision. Working towards a goal that inspires you causes you to live full-out, it makes a profound difference. By connecting with what inspires you deeply, you will find the courage to powerfully address those areas of your life that aren’t working for you and to play a bigger game in those areas that are. I embrace a sense of adventure in what might happen, and not everything I’ve tried has worked, but you can’t let setbacks define you. Not everyone will support you in your journey, at times you will face roadblocks and disappointments, but it’s a choice you have to make to keep moving forward. Keep showing up. Showing up, showing up, and showing up. Even when you don’t feel like it!
When I wrote “Find Your Courage” the book felt bigger than I was. So I focused on the task immediately at hand and just began to write. I had four children under 6 at the time so I just had to write when I could and thankfully, I was so inspired, that it was truly a joy to write. When the time came to find a publisher it was a real voyage of courage as I had dozens and dozens of rejections before Find Your Courage was published. It took persistence which is something I wrote about in the book. Actually just writing my book was an act of courage… I had to walk my talk every step of the way.
While it hasn’t been all easy I’ve stayed motivated by a strong sense of purpose and passion for what I do. Big planes use up most their fuel just getting off the ground. SO too does it take enormous energy to get our dreams of the ground. When we don’t get the results we planned, the response we want, or the feedback we hope for, it’s easy to fall into disillusionment. So it’s important not to let our results (or lack thereof) define us and to stay focused on what we want.
I juggle a busy career and four young kids (7, 8, 11 and 12 years old) and sometimes I think ‘what am I doing?!’ But what is the alternative? Certainly not one that inspire me! So onward with the juggling act, and taking action in the presence of my fears and doubts, I go!
I want to help every woman have the courage to dream bigger dreams for themselves and become a bigger person; to find their courage to live more boldly.
Are YOU ready to live more boldy? It’s time to TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.
